There are many many image optimizers for WordPress, On Internet and On thge WordPress library itself.
From what I have seen most of those tells you to sign up to their service and then give out spoonfull of credits to resize and serve Images.
So below are Some WordPress plugins which are ‘Free‘ as well as do not need any kind of email or something to work. Though keep in mind that these plugins are good but they take your system resources to resize and optimize Images. Depending on hosting you are using or server you have deployed, those plugins work fast and slow.
1. Ewww – Overall the best plugin in my opinion.
Not the best UI but its a no BS plugin and I love this for being that way. It gives the best experience for my expectations and gives out generous number of options one can expect from a free plugin. this plugin may tell you to install some libraries on to your webserver but it worth it since it does not bound you to some limit of Images you can optimize and etc.
2. Smush – WPMU DEV
If Ewww is not for you then you can choose Smush by WPMU DEV it gives you tons of features (Except Webp) in free version and UI is very modern and Friendly for new users. Comes with Lazy loading for frontend, custom folder optimization etc. Also comes with backing up of Original Images.
3. Robin Image Optimizer
Robin Image optimizer is also another very User Friendly Plugin that supports Bulk optimizations, but biggest con of this plugin could be that it does not comes with Webp conversions in free version, performance wise it works very well and is very easy to use.
4. Converter for Media
It do not optimize images(jpgs and PNGs) but rather converts your existing images to Webp but it does that pretty well, AVIF images available in Pro version and you will have to tweak one option(shown below) if you are on NGINX webserver.
